How do clear spaces affect kids’ minds?
A child’s physical environment plays a crucial role in their ability to regulate emotions. Self-regulation—the ability to manage reactions, navigate daily challenges, and problem-solve effectively—is a vital life skill. Research suggests that a clear, uncluttered space supports stronger self-regulation skills in children, helping them stay organized, focus better, and build more positive relationships with family members. Try these practical tips to clear the clutter and create a more calming home environment to support your child’s emotional well-being and cognitive development.

Quick declutter space refresh tips
Clear containers
I love using clear containers of different sizes to quickly contain messes that sprawl out of control. Being able to see through the container allows myself or the kids to find things faster. Very small containers for play dough and slime – 1-2oz tupperware. Small containers for beads, writing and coloring supplies, and craft extras like buttons. Medium, containers for train sets, legos, and blocks. Larger containers for outgrown clothes, extra blankets, and outgrown or out of season shoes and boots.
Baskets
One way I keep our coffee table clear so that it’s ready for board games and puzzles, is to keep a laundry basket that fits right underneath. That makes cleaning the table very easy, so fool proof that any kid can do it without much thinking involved. About once a month, I go through the basket’s items – books, figures, and random pens and pencils – and return them to their home. This chore can also be delegated to the kids.

Stuffed animal control
I felt like such a boss when I figured out how to contain the stuffed animals, keep them dust free, AND add extra cozy decor to our space. I found these 33-inch bean bag chair covers that are stuffed with stuffed animals. I got three of of the same pattern and let each kid pick the stuffed animals they wanted to stuff into their bag. Now, this is not as convenient to find where a stuffie since the bags are not clear like the storage containers I use. My kids are the only ones looking for the stuffies, not us adults, and the kids have an expansive amount of time, so I don’t mind that they have to dig through the bags a little to find what they are looking for. Also, they have to follow a rule – one stuffie out, one stuffie back in. If they take one stuffie out, then they have to say good bye to another stuffie and put it away, which helps to keep our space clear. The kids also love sitting or laying on these bags to read or to relax on the weekends.
Cozy corners
Now that the toys are contained and the space feels more open, let’s add in cozy, playful elements that invite engagement without creating clutter. Incorporate soft textures and warm touches to make the area feel welcoming. Add a few neatly folded blankets on the couch. Lay down a cozy area rug to define the play space, offering a soft surface for sitting or playing. Scatter a few fluffy pillows and stuffed animals on the couch to create a sense of security and relaxation. Consider adding soft, dimmable lighting, such as a small lamp or string lights for a unique touch. All these elements are inexpensive and can be easily swapped out if you wanted to change up the style.
Kids Cleaning Crew
A tidy, well-organized space—where everything has a designated home—makes it easier for kids to pitch in and help with cleanup. As mentioned earlier, clear containers allow children to easily find their toys and return them when they’re done playing. They can also help manage the stuffed animal population by using bean bag storage system. While setting up an organized home takes some initial effort, it pays off when children actively participate in maintaining tidiness—giving parents a well-deserved break, fostering responsibility in kids, and creating a calm environment that supports self-regulation and emotional development.
