I love being cozy at home, even if that means as a time-strapped working mom of 3, I can only decorate and declutter one small corner of the home at a time. The comfort of one organized countertop or one artsy shelf dissipates the despair of clutter and mess everywhere else. Here are some of the refresh changes I made to make some corners of my home a little more cozy.
On our back door (between garage and laundry room) I swapped out an over-the-door-hung tiered rod. It was used for scarves that were rarely worn. I graded it for this over-the-door-hung mesh storage organizer. Putting caps and winter accessories such as gloves and more beanie hats there allowed the accessories to be visualized more easily. This cuts down on time trying to find things, and allows my kids to put their things away more easily. An added benefit is that I re-homed bug spray and sunblock into the space where the accessories used to be, so that it would be more easy to see and reach, which would help me remember to apply sunblock on the 4yo. Once those products were removed, I found 3 umbrellas hidden from view behind the products! Another benefit of cleaning and organizing every once in a while – save money on finding things I already have, so I don’t have to buy them!
The second place I changed was the door between the laundry room and kitchen. I swapped out a very normal over-the-door-hung hooks. This was helpful for aprons, which were rarely used, but the hooks were too high for my kids to reach it to hang their lunch bags after school. I replaced it with this set with hooks that were lower, and had 3 tiers of hooks. That way, my kids can be responsible for putting their lunch bags away after school. The increased number of hooks also ensured there would be enough space for all the lunch bags – one for each kid, one for my husband and I, and one for packing snacks for a day out!
The 3rd space I refreshed was purely for decoration purposes. This shelf originally was where I put our lunch bags, and the top was a temporary home for a box of snacks – which never made it to the pantry. Now that the lunch bags had a new home, and the box of snacks has been properly handled, I had a lovely blank space to decorate! I put some journaling and leadership books on the first shelf, and some moisturizers on the second shelf. As for the top, I searched around the house for what we already had, and I put together a cluster of birdhouses the kids had made, with a few ceramic birds, and a cluster of electric candles. I love that this busy, hardworking corner can also be turned into a calming, cozy space to balance out the day’s moods.
